Understanding Roles & Permissions

OpsGrip uses role-based access to keep things organized and secure. Each team member is assigned a role that determines what they can see and do.

Available Roles

Admin

Full control over everything. Admins can manage billing, invite and remove team members, configure integrations, and access all Settings tabs. Every organization needs at least one Admin — the person who created the account is automatically an Admin.

IT Director / CIO

Big-picture access. IT Directors see all operational data, reports, and analytics. They can manage team members and projects but may have limited access to billing and sensitive account settings.

Sysadmin

Infrastructure-focused. Sysadmins have full access to network topology, IPAM, alerts, inventory, and integrations. They're the power users who manage the technical backbone.

Help Desk

User-facing support. Help Desk members see the ticket queue, knowledge base, task boards, and team communication tools. They're focused on resolving issues and documenting solutions.

Field Tech

Mobile and on-site focused. Field Techs have access to trip ops, inventory, site maps, and checklists. The interface prioritizes mobile-friendly views for work in the field.

What Roles Affect

  • Sidebar navigation — Only relevant modules appear for each role
  • Dashboard defaults — Each role gets a starter dashboard template tuned to their work
  • OGI responses — OGI tailors its answers based on your role. A sysadmin asking about VLANs gets a technical deep dive; a help desk member gets a practical walkthrough
  • Data visibility — Some data is role-restricted to prevent information overload

Changing Roles

Admins can change any team member's role at any time: 1. Go to Team in the sidebar 2. Click on the team member 3. Update their Role 4. Save

The change takes effect immediately — their sidebar, dashboard, and OGI behavior will update on their next page load.

Tips

  • When in doubt, start people with a more restrictive role and expand later
  • The Admin role should be limited to people who need access to billing and account settings
  • Roles are about focus, not just restriction — they help each person see the tools most relevant to their job
